Sound Off

How many bicycle infractions has the Lawrence police department written since January? We hear a lot about bicycle safety, but not about infractions — such as failing to use a hand turn, running a stop sign, etc. I see a lot of people riding their bicycles downtown on the street.

The most common infractions written to bicyclists are for running stop signs and red lights, said Sgt. Michael Monroe, Lawrence police spokesman, but the city does not keep records on the number of tickets written to bicyclists. He said the number is lumped together with other traffic violations. About 14,000 traffic citations were issued between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30, said Vicki Stanwix, Lawrence Municipal Court manager. In all of 2008, 35,543 traffic tickets were written in Lawrence.
