Are there any restrictions for spading up the side and front of a house, including close to the street, for a vegetable garden? How much of a yard can be put into a garden?
According to Brian Jimenez, codes enforcement manager, “There are no city regulations prohibiting a garden to be located in a side yard or front yard as the city code does not differentiate between grass, other landscaping and a vegetable garden.” However, weeds are another issue, Jimenez said. “The city’s weed ordinance would apply and would require the vegetation to be maintained and not obstruct drivers’ view if on a corner lot,” he said. “Using the right of way, usually the area described between the curb and sidewalk would not be appropriate. Improvements made in the right of way could be removed for street or other city projects.”
