Are there falcons in Lawrence? I thought I saw them on two different occasions. I saw one chasing a bird and finally catching it in flight.

“Absolutely,” there are falcons in the Lawrence area, said Chuck Otte, a bird enthusiast and K-State Research and Extension agent in Geary County. From most to least common, falcons in the area include the American kestrel, the merlin, the prairie falcon and the peregrine falcon, said Otte, who operates the Web site ksbirds.org. Some other birds often seen in the area can be mistaken for falcons, including the sharp-shinned hawk, Otte said.
