Due to budget issues, the state has not funded a request from Douglas County judges for a magistrate judge. What is the typical workload for the county-funded pro tem judge in Douglas County?
According to Court Administrator Linda Koester-Vogelsang, Judge Pro Tem James George presides over an estimated 5,800 hearings annually, including criminal first appearances, juvenile cases and other proceedings. That is about 30 percent of the district court’s total hearings. The payroll for the pro tem judge position and a clerk adds up to 8.5 percent of the court’s 2009 operating costs.
