I noticed Douglas County installed a new tornado warning siren about a year ago in the 1200 block of North 1100 Road. Are there plans to install more sirens in the county?
Teri Smith, director of Douglas County Emergency Management, said the agency has no plans to install more sirens in the county. She said the county looked at a few possible new sites, but none of them met the criteria for placement of a new siren. Typically, the criteria includes placing sirens in areas where more than 100 families live or if an outdoor park or commercial area is nearby. County residents can submit a written request to the agency for consideration of a new siren by sending a letter to Douglas County Emergency Management, 111 E. 11th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
