I heard there were tunnels from the Bowersock Dam that led to downtown businesses underground. They were used to supply water to the businesses in the early years. Is this true?

Stephen Hill, president of the Bowersock Mills and Power Co., said he doesn’t know the answer. Over the years, Hill has heard stories of tunnels leading from the dam to Lawrence businesses. But he has never seen any evidence of those tunnels, such as their notations on maps. If there were tunnels, Hill said, they would have been carrying mechanical energy, not water.
