Where can dead batteries be recycled in town?
Car batteries can be recycled at auto parts stores and Lawrence Battery Company during business hours, according to Kathy Richardson, supervisor of the city’s Waste Reduction & Recycling Operations. Rechargeable batteries including Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, Li-ion and small sealed lead batteries can be recycled at AT&T, Best Buy, Best MACS, Office Depot, RadioShack, Sears, Simply Wireless (T-Mobile), The Home Depot, Verizon Wireless, and Wal-Mart’s south Iowa store. In addition, the City of Lawrence/Douglas County Household Hazardous Waste Program accepts all types of batteries. Call 832-3030 to schedule an appointment to drop off spent batteries at this facility. For more recycling information, log on to LawrenceRecycles.org.
