Sound Off

Are the concrete pillars that are in front of many homes on Mississippi Street and throughout Old West Lawrence, really horse-hitching posts? If so, how old are they?

Karl Gridley, a local historian and native Lawrencian, says that the pillars are actually made of stone and they are indeed horse-hitching posts. As for their age, Gridley guesses they would date to about the 1890s because that’s when the brick streets that are found in the same parts of Lawrence were put in.
