The offspring want to know: What happened to Pizza Street?
The buffet-style restaurant closed last week after two years at 4000 W. Sixth St., in the Hy-Vee shopping center in northwest Lawrence. The closing is a first for the McKinney, Texas-based chain, which now has nine locations. Among those remaining are restaurants in Olathe and Shawnee, plus four others on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metro area. The franchised location in Lawrence had the lowest volume of all Pizza Streets, despite operating in a market with desirable demographics and in a center with a popular grocery store and other high-traffic shops, said Ron Hooper, president and chief executive officer of Pizza Street Enterprises Inc. “It was rather inexplicable. It was really an enigma,” he said. “I think Lawrence is a really unique environment.”
