Why does the ambulance charge the caller when they come to their house?

An ambulance user fee is charged when Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical treats a patient at the scene or takes them somewhere for treatment “to help offset the expense of providing emergency medical services to the community,” said Lisa Patterson, Lawrence city spokeswoman.

Ambulance rates went up at the beginning of 2009. They range from $476 to $619, depending on the nature of the call. The user is also charged $7.38 per mile.
