Why doesn’t the Lawrence school district take off for Presidents Day?
“A committee of teachers, classified staff and administrators develops a school calendar for recommendation to the school board,” said Julie Boyle, the district’s director of communications. “This committee has a complex task: Develop a school calendar that provides optimum instructional time for students, while meeting the requirements of the negotiated Master Agreement (which includes holiday designations), Kansas statutes and the Kansas State Board of Education, as well as considering family vacation and holiday needs. … Parents have the option of excusing their students from school, such as for family activities on Presidents Day.”
