How many street sweeping machines does the city of Lawrence have? The street sweeper went by my house last week. And here it is again. Did we buy more machines in the past year — it seems that the frequency of one coming by has increased.

The city has three street sweepers and has not added additional sweepers to the fleet in recent years. According to Tom Orzulak, street division manager, the city tries to sweep every street at least three times a year. There are a total of 815 lane miles in the city limits; the yearly total for miles swept is 2,445 miles. The division sweeps every day when the temperature is above freezing; sweepers use water to control dust and can't be used during freezing conditions. Mild temperatures this fall allowed street crews to complete four passes on almost every street this year.
