Sound Off

I had an interesting debate with my doctor. He told me it was 100 percent illegal to drive while taking pain medication such as Oxycontin and Lortab. According to the packing information and my pharmacist, I was instructed to use caution while operating machinery or driving. Which one is correct?

“There is no drug specifically mentioned in the law that says you cannot drive if it is in your system,” said Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Edna Buttler. “However, any drug that impairs you and is in your system when driving impaired is illegal.” Buttler said people should take prescribed drugs, to see how it affects them, before getting behind the wheel. “If a drug prescribed has special warnings about driving, even more precaution should be taken,” said Buttler, highway patrol spokeswoman.
