How many inmates are in Kansas prisons? And how does that compare with the rest of the country?

According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, there were 8,551 inmates in Kansas prisons on Nov. 25, 2009. Kansas’ incarceration rate was 312 per 100,000 residents, 30 percent lower than the national rate of 447 in 2007, according to the National Institute of Corrections.
