What’s the “guest tax” and what’s the money used for?

The guest tax is a 5 percent tax on hotel and motel room rates in Lawrence. According to the city of Lawrence’s Web site, the money is “used primarily to fund the Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau.” In 2010, the guest tax is budgeted to bring in more than $1.2 million to the city budget.
