In the recent hit-and-run death of a Lawrence resident, the suspect was charged with two felonies: leaving the scene of an accident involving the death of a person and failure to report an accident. What are the possible punishments for these crimes?

Both offenses are considered severity level 9 “person” offenses by Kansas statute, and both carry possible prison sentences of 11 to 13 months. However, both are also classified as “presumptive probation” offenses by the Kansas Sentencing Guidelines grid, meaning that a judge could sentence an offender to either prison or probation.
