How often does the city test for the herbicide atrazine in the drinking water? What are the results typically?
Aurora Shields, Lawrence’s water quality manager, said the city tests for atrazine at least once a month, twice a month during March, August and November, and weekly in April, May and June. Increased testing coincides with the land application of chemicals, and the results are used to adjust the treatment processes to remove more atrazine, she said. Shields also said typical levels have always been below the Environmental Protection Agency’s established requirement of 3 parts per billion. In 2008, the highest level of atrazine was 1.4 ppb and the lowest was 0.2 ppb. The results were reported in the consumer confidence report, available online at www.lawrenceks.org/ utilities/annual_report.
