Coming out of North Lawrence and heading south by Johnny's Tavern and going across the Kaw River bridge, the road is sunken down. Will it ever be rebuilt?
The city has plans to rebuild the entire intersection at North Second and Locust streets, said Chuck Soules, the city's director of public works. But original plans unveiled earlier this year - and sent to contractors who might be interested in handling the estimated $1.2 million job - failed to secure any takers. City engineers now are revising the plans, Soules said. He expects work to start in 2010 or 2011, once a new East Lawrence interchange on the Kansas Turnpike is open. The intersection project must wait, he said, because otherwise, access to North Lawrence would be severely limited.
