Is Cinco de Mayo the Mexican independence day?

That is a common misconception in the United States, but Cinco de Mayo commemorates a Mexican victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is observed around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Mexico's Independence Day is Sept. 16.
