I would like to know why when a 911 call is made for an ambulance, a fire truck is also sent. Isn't sending a fire truck for an ambulance call unnecessary?

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Division Chief Eve Tolefree said the practice of sending a fire truck on a medical call is based on the severity of the emergency. Most fire trucks are staffed with a paramedic, which gives emergency responders an added medical resource. Sometimes fire trucks are recalled if it's discovered an emergency is not as severe as first thought. The Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Web site provides an in-depth explanation of the department's policy, which can be found at www.lawrenceks.org/fire_medical/faq.
