Is the city able to recycle the sand and salt it sweeps up off streets after a snowstorm?
Tom Orzulak, the city's street division manager, said the city does not recycle the material. The salt dissolves, Orzulak said, and the sand becomes contaminated with other road debris that makes it difficult to spread. He said the city had analyzed removing the debris, but determined it would cost more than new sand. The city takes the swept-up sand to a construction landfill that the city maintains near the Clinton Water Treatment Plant on Wakarusa Drive.
