Does Lawrence have any public storm shelters? If so, where? If not, why not?
No public storm shelters are in Douglas County or the city of Lawrence. During the past few years, local government agencies have discussed providing public storm shelters based on FEMA guidelines, which include structural design, parking and the practicality of providing enough shelters so they can be accessed within five minutes, said Douglas County Emergency Management Director Teri Smith. "The public bodies have always concluded that it is not feasible to have public shelters in Douglas County," Smith said. "Of course, future County Commissions or City Commissions could reach a different conclusion if they were willing to commit the tax resources to build storm shelters."
