What's wrong with the traffic light at 15th and Iowa? Every morning now, since Christmas, it stops traffic in all directions.
When there is severe winter weather, as in the month of December, a safety feature is activated in traffic lights. According to John Craver, the senior signal traffic technician for the city, each light has a camera that operates on an 80 percent gray feature. The feature determines high- and low-contrast conditions. When there is low contrast during snowstorms, for example, the camera will go into recall mode, he said. In recall mode, the camera will essentially alternate green lights at each lane, whether there is a vehicle in the intersection or not. Craver said this slows traffic at an intersection tremendously. The safety feature is manually deactivated when weather improves. Call 832-3035 if you have questions, comments or problems.
