How do you start a Neighborhood Watch Program?
You should first talk to your neighbors and determine their interest and willingness to participate. A Neighborhood Watch Program is typically made up of neighbors on both sides of one block or a small group of apartment buildings or townhouses. According to Lawrence police, participation of half of the neighbors on a block is needed for the program to be effective. The group works with a crime prevention officer to be trained on how to identify suspects and vehicles if the police need to be called or how to record property in case of theft. A location, time and place would need to be determined to meet with an officer. For more information or to schedule a meeting, contact the Lawrence Police Department's Special Projects Unit at 830-7407.
