What are the qualifications to apply for a house with Habitat for Humanity?

There are three primary requirements for a person to apply to have a house built through Habitat for Humanity. Jeremy Hahn, executive director of the Lawrence affiliate, said those are need, ability to pay and willingness to partner. Families have to fall in the 30 percent to 60 percent range of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development median income guide for their home county. The 2007 estimated HUD median income in Douglas County was $61,500. Hahn said a person also has to prove having inadequate housing. People must have a steady income and show they can pay bills on time. Hahn said they set payment plans a family can afford. Finally, Hahn said every family that is qualified must guarantee "sweat equity," which means they must help build their house with volunteers.
