Sound Off

I know the Legislature is considering raising the state cigarette tax, but what I don't know is how much is it now, and how does that compare with other states?

The state cigarette tax in Kansas is 79 cents per pack. A proposal before the Legislature would increase that by 50 cents per pack to $1.29. Kansas' current rate ranks 28th in the nation. Of neighboring states, Oklahoma's rate is $1.03 per pack; Colorado, 84 cents; Nebraska, 64 cents; and Missouri, 17 cents, which is the next to lowest rate among states. Iowa charges 36 cents per pack.
