Your On the Street question as to whether Barack Obama can carry Kansas raised a question in my mind. Did John F. Kennedy carry Kansas?

No. In the 1960 presidential election, the eight Kansas electoral votes went to Richard Nixon over Kennedy, who won the election. The last time a Democratic presidential candidate won electoral votes in Kansas was in 1964, when Lyndon B. Johnson won the state.
