How do the blue and yellow lines get on televised football games? The blue line appears across the line of scrimmage, and the yellow appears at the first down target.

Visit howstuffworks .com at “How the First-Down Line Works” for an explanation of the complicated process that involves eight computers (four SGI computers, one PC, three special computers used in conjunction with the TV cameras). Each camera’s movement is recorded 30 times per second from the camera mount and sent back to the production truck. Special color palettes are used to prevent the line from painting over players. The “first and 10” line debuted Sept. 27, 1998.
