What steps should be taken to become an organ donor?

The first step is to talk with your family and inform them of your intentions, said Jan Finn, chief operations officer for Midwest Transplant Network. The next step would be to sign up for the donor registry through the network's Web site at or by visiting the local Division of Motor Vehicles office, 1035 N. Third St. and signing the back of your driver's license. "The most important thing, really, is to talk to your family about the donation because even when you put it on your driver's license, at the time of death, someone is going to talk to your next of kin to make sure that it is OK for that donation to happen," Finn said. "So, it is really critical that your loved ones know."
