Where did the Jayhawk originate? Who designed it?

The Jayhawk has been the KU mascot since the turn of the 20th century. The current iteration of the Jayhawk, known as the Happy Jayhawk, was designed by KU student Hal Sandy in 1946. Though it initially had a block KU at its center, the Trajan font KU was added just a few years ago.
