Why was the new traffic signal on East 11th Street, between Connecticut Street and Haskell Avenue installed? How does it work?
David Woosley, the city's traffic engineer, said it's a pedestrian-crossing beacon that began operating in late August. It was installed mainly because neighborhood residents had a difficult time crossing 11th Street at certain times during the day.
A pedestrian pushes the button to cross, and the yellow lights begin to flash to warn drivers until the light turns red. Woosley said the beacon was designed to reduce the delay for drivers. It's the first one in Lawrence.
