When and how did Earth Day start?

The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970, when then-U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin proposed the holiday in response to the accelerating decline of the environment, such as the Cuyahoga River catching on fire partly because of flammable pollutants in the river water.
