Is there a big enough right of way or some other way the Lecompton bridge can be kept open or a new bridge built alongside of it without shutting the old bridge down?

The current bridge can be kept open to one lane during the repairs. That means traffic signaling or flaggers will be needed to stop vehicles or direct them through. Building a new bridge would be much more costly. Douglas County thinks it is best to close the bridge and get the repairs done as quickly as possible while Jefferson County wants the bridge open to one lane because of the problems that closure would cause for the Perry-Lecompton school district and Perry businesses.
