Lawrence High School's pom coach, Ashley Stewart, was fired after an incident involving a pom squad member who admitted to drinking and was then allowed to cheer at the Sept. 29 homecoming football game. Was the student reprimanded?
"The high school followed board of education policy in its handling of this matter," said Julie Boyle, director of communications for the Lawrence school district. "Sanctions for students determined to be under the influence of alcohol are outlined in Board of Education Policy JDDA: Drug Free Schools. "A first offense under this policy carries a three-day suspension or a one-day suspension with the condition of an alcohol/drug assessment by a licensed mental health practitioner. Board policies and student handbooks are available on the district's Web site at www.usd497.org."
