Sound Off

I heard that we had stopped testing for mumps in Lawrence because it was a confirmed outbreak. How are they keeping track of the number of mumps cases if they are not testing?

"When in an outbreak situation, individuals who meet the clinical case definition are considered to have mumps, even if laboratory testing is not done," said Sheryl Tirol Goodwin, communications coordinator for the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department.

The patients can be counted as a mumps case without the laboratory testing, she said.
