What happened to the Jayhawk in front of the Kansas Union?
After vandals battered the Classic Jayhawk sculpture, it was determined the bird would never stand before the Kansas Union again. A new and improved sculpture has been ordered, but it has yet to arrive, said Pat Beard, building service director for KU Memorial Unions.
Meanwhile, the injured Jayhawk sculpture has been dressed up and fixed, best it can be, for photo opportunities during university commencement. The sculpture will likely wear a graduation cap and gown and will be on display in the Kansas Union, Beard said. But it won't be tough enough to withstand big hugs, and it can't be climbed on, Beard said.
