What will the new east campus gateway at Kansas University look like, and when will construction begin?
The university plans to begin construction of the new Docking Family Gateway later this month. It will be near 13th Street and Oread Avenue between Smith Hall and the Kansas Union. If the Campus Historic Preservation Board and the Lawrence Historical Resources Committee approve, the gateway and fountain will be complete before the fall semester begins. The gateway will include a fountain with vertical jets of water in a round plaza with landscaping with stone signage. The gateway and fountain will be oval-shaped and about 16 feet wide. The pylon will be 19 feet, 6 inches tall. KU alumnus Jill Docking and her husband, former Lt. Gov. Tom Docking, made a $500,000 donation, which will pay for most of the $600,000 project.
