I ride my bicycle on the sidewalk that runs past the Westar Energy substation on Kasold Drive near 31st Street. There are two trailers with "Hazardous Waste" written on a canvas cover, and near the sidewalk there is a pipe coming from that area with green gooey stuff coming out of it. Are my bicycle tires going to melt?
According to a Westar Energy spokesperson Gina Penzig, the substance coming out of the pipe is algae and is not related to the truck in the substation. She says the cyclist is correct that a hazardous materials truck has been on the site. Some mineral oil spilled from a piece of failed equipment, and the truck is there as part of that cleanup.
