How much has state spending grown over the years?

The budget for fiscal year 2006, which started July 1, is $11.582 billion. Ten years ago, in fiscal year 1996, it was $7.628 billion; and 10 years before that, in fiscal year 1986, it was $3.501 billion.

In fiscal year 1976, the state budget was $1.509 billion, and in fiscal year 1966, it was $526.5 million.

Since 1966, the largest percentage increases occurred from 1970 to 1980 with many of those years seeing double-digit increases in spending. The budget grew by 16.5 percent in 1970, 21.2 percent in 1971, 19.3 percent in 1974, 15.1 percent in 1975, 14.5 percent in 1976, 13.4 percent in 1977, and 18.4 percent in 1980.
