The picture in the Nov. 11 newspaper about the new "Capote" movie had a picture of a car with a Kansas license tag on it. My recollection of tags in those days, they were new every year and they began with the number 1. If that's true, I'm surprised the city and county would have had 57,609 vehicles registered in 1959, which I believe is the year shown. Which of my presumed facts is incorrect?
According to Lawrence historian Steve Jansen, "Without doing more research, I can't be certain but given that there were only 26,000 people living in 1960 in Lawrence and approximately 10,000-12,000 elsewhere in the county, if your recollection is correct, which without research I can not corroborate, then the license plate is wrong."
