How much food did the letter carriers collect during their May 14 food drive?

"We guesstimate about 22,000 pounds," said Al "Ace" Hickey, a Lawrence letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service who helped organize the drive.

"We estimate it was about 2,000 pounds more than last year," he said. "It's hard to say because we're really not in a position to weigh everything that's collected. But it was a tremendous success."

The food - canned goods, mostly - was distributed to six food banks in Lawrence.
