How many prisoners can the Douglas County Jail hold, and is it ever overcrowded?
The 5-year-old jail has room for 196 prisoners. That number is misleading, however, jail officials say. The largest areas of the jail are medium-security and work release, each with 56 beds. Medium security has been at or near capacity for much of the past several months, causing the county to rent space in other county jails to hold the overflow of prisoners. The farming-out of prisoners keeps the jail from being overcrowded.
A couple of months ago, the Douglas County Commission approved a jail renovation that would allow from 20 to 25 beds in work release to be freed up for other prisoners.
