I'd like to know why our second half of property tax is due May 20 this year when I distinctly remember last year they said that was a one-time thing?
The second half of property tax payments are due May 10. The decision to move up the deadline for second-half property tax payments to May 10 from June 20 was made in August 2002.
Douglas County Treasurer Pat Wells said the second-half property-tax payments now will be May 10 as a result of a "tax accelerator" measure signed by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in 2003. The change is permanent and was approved by the Legislature during the 2003 session.
The changed provided a one-time benefit of $179 million to the state general fund and helped the cash-poor state end its fiscal year in the black in 2004.
