Can you tell us what the airlines do with all of the confiscated items they take off individuals at security checkpoints?

At Kansas City International Airport, those items are picked up by the city of Kansas City, Mo., and disposed of, said Dan Miato, spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration at the airport.

If passengers are found with illegal items, such as a long knife, weapon or hazardous material, they are questioned by law enforcement officers, Miato said.

It is not possible to get a confiscated item back from airport security, Miato said. That would require special storage and record keeping for thousands of items for later pick-up, he said.
