Sound Off

I just saw the movie "Walk the Line." Can you tell me who played guitar in Johnny Cash's band back in the early days? Does he have any albums out? What's he doing now?

Luther Perkins was the lead guitarist in Cash's bands, the "Tennessee Two" and, later, the "Tennessee Three," from 1955 to 1968. He did not pursue a solo career.

Perkins died in August 1968, seven months before the release of Cash's best-selling "Johnny Cash at San Quentin," after falling asleep with a cigarette, causing the couch to catch fire. He was 40.
