Did KU go through the usual hiring process in hiring Andy Tompkins? Was the position announced and opened to other applicants?

Tompkins, former education commissioner for the state, will join the KU education faculty this year.

Lynn Bretz, a KU spokeswoman, said: "Andy Tompkins' appointment as associate professor in the KU School of Education's Educational Leadership Program followed procedures for a 'direct hire.'

"When an individual's expertise or background offers a unique opportunity to enhance or enrich a staff, a department may request a search waiver for a direct hire. If Human Resources grants the waiver, the department then must follow the job interview process before an offer can be made.

"Kansas regents universities and other state agencies use direct hires on an occasional basis for diversity opportunities, promotions, emergencies, hiring prominent scholars and other unique circumstances."
