I realize USD 497 teachers did not get a raise this year, but classified employees didn't either. You never hear anything about that. I just want to know if the district is trying to get the classified people a raise as well as the teachers?

Pending the final outcome of the Legislature's school finance deliberations, Lawrence school board members have delayed deciding whether there'll be enough money in the budget to cover a pay raise for classified employees.

School officials have said they recognize the need to raise classified workers' pay.

"One of the school district's goals is to recruit and retain high quality staff -- both certified and classified," said Bob Arevalo, USD 497's director of personnel. "We believe that the ability to offer competitive salaries and benefits is a key to achieving this goal."
