I want to know whether the insects making the buzzing noise outdoors are cicadas or locusts. Or are cicadas and locusts the same thing?

The insects you hear are cicadas, said Chip Taylor, an entomology professor at Kansas University and director of Monarch Watch.

"Cicadas are often called locusts, but technically they are different," Taylor said. "Locusts are grasshoppers. Cicadas are cicadas. They are in different orders of species."

Also, some of the outdoor buzzing is likely a product of insects commonly called tree crickets.

"They're in the same order as cicadas," Taylor said. "They're smaller and higher up in the tree. They're both singing to attract mates."
