In regard to Tuesday's article on health insurance, page 1B: Why is it that parents who work for the state, who are low-income and would financially meet the guidelines for HealthWave for coverage for their children, are denied the coverage because they work for the state?
Caleb Asher, a spokesman for the Kansas Department of Administration, said federal rules governing HealthWave prohibited the state from enrolling state employees to the program. HealthWave is funded through the federal Children's Health Insurance Program. Mike Deines, a spokesman for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, said that officials from Kansas and other states had asked Congress to change the rules, but that so far the prohibition remained in effect.
