On Friday, July 23, there was an article in the Journal-World, front page, about KU receiving a $18 million grant and this was secured by Joan Hunt, senior associate dean for research, at KU Medical Center. Does she personally receive any of this grant, and what is her salary?

"As with all federally funded research, Dr. Hunt, as the principal investigator, receives a modest portion of the grant to support her work," said Dennis McCulloch, a Medical Center spokesman. "In most life science grants, the knowledge and ability of the researcher or principal investigator is the critical component to a successful program. In Dr. Hunt's case, after 22 years of work at the Medical Center, ... her salary in fiscal year 2005 is $215,919, of which 56 percent is from grants and other private sources."
